It runs!! Well...it ran.

Posted 09-12-2010 at 08:57 PM by redfalken

These photos are actually from last weekend but I've been a little busy. I try to get 3 or 4 hours in after work during the week and dawn to dusk on the weekends. Things seemed like they were finally making progress and there was an end in sight.

Patrick and Jeff came over to help and I couldn't have done it without them. After deflating the tires, jacking up the rear end, and shortening the chains a few links, we could finally get it over the front and we carefully lowered it into...

Painted engine bay!

Posted 08-28-2010 at 09:02 PM by redfalken

After welding up some errant holes and cleaning the engine bay, it was ready for a coat of paint! Did I mention cleaning?! A probably went over everything 10 times with Simple Green, Scotch Brite pads, sandpaper, repeat, repeat... Finally, after masking, a wipe with some DuPont degreaser.

Pat was over to help out and loan me his HVLP spray gun. I used Eastwood Chassis Black. A quart worked out pretty well and I'm very pleased with the results. More glossy than a semi-gloss but dull...

Engine is together!

Posted 08-19-2010 at 10:37 PM by redfalken

The engine is now ready to be installed! I didn't do much to the bottom end besides clean it up. That includes the cam and hydraulic lifters. Installed the cylinder head, water pump, timing chain cover, and thermostat housing before giving it a final coat of ceramic engine paint.

I bought a paint made by POR-15 for the exhaust manifold called "Factory Manifold Gray" that's supposed to be good to 1400 degrees. I sandblasted it, scrubbed it with Simple Green and put on 2 coats....

Timing chain & Cylinder head assembly

Still making progress on the engine build! Some parts have arrived including a new dual roller timing chain and gear seat (see photo) from Classic Inlines http://www.classicinlines.com. The old chain had over 1/2" of deflection which is where you should consider changing it. This new chain is much more sturdy than the stock chain so it should last quite awhile!

I also installed some teflon valve seals. The photo below shows the new seal on the right and the stock umbrella seal...

Modified cylinder head & under hood restoration

Posted 08-01-2010 at 12:10 AM by redfalken

I had a hard time coming up with a title for my first blog entry! This is one of those projects that has a lot of things going on. So pardon the long post but I'll try to get you caught up. Feel free to comment if you have suggestions or questions.

Most important to deal with was a leaky floor pan. I welded in new metal a couple of years ago and there has been some leaking when I'm out on the highway in the rain. It's my daily driver so this happens quite a bit here in Seattle. I...
