Thread: Inlet nipple on air cleaner cover. What is it for?

Inlet nipple on air cleaner cover. Is it for the automatic choke?

Hello. I have a 1963 Falcon with a 260 V8 and a two-barrel carburetor. The car has presently has an after-market "Sprint style" air cleaner cover and I want to replace it with an original equipment-type cover (see attached photo). The air cleaner cover in the photo was said to have come from a 1963 Ford with a 260.

Take a look at the nipple that is pointed to in the attached photos (click on the photo to make it larger). The tube passes through the air cleaner cover bottom.

    What is this for?

It seems to be it an inlet for the automatic choke, but I just want to make sure because all the 1963 Falcons with 260 motors that I have seen just had one choke tube.

The Ford service manual 260-289 V8 supplement, Page 3, Figure-7, shows an air inlet tube from the from the clean side of the carburetor attaching to the automatic choke heat chamber.

See 1963-1965 V-8 CHOKE TUBES, SKU: ZCH6501,“This part is a set of 2 choke tubes designed to fit all models of the 1963-1965 Ford Falcon & Mercury Comet equipped with a V-8 engine and a carburetor which utilizes an automatic choke.” Reference: http://www.falconparts.com/ford-falc...ES-44p1185.htm

    Thanks, Dennis in Tampa.

I don't have this air cleaner assembly but at the risk of showing ignorance, will take a wild guess..... Could this be intended to connect to the choke stove on the exhaust manifold for clean air? I think you're on the right track.

Its the fresh air inlet for the exhaust heated choke.

There was a rubber vacuum lineto a steal tube that ran down to the bottom of the passenger exhaust manifold. The air was then heated and exitsthe top of the manifold that runs to the carb choke via steal tube.

I found a diagram online once.. check some of the mustang guys..
